Recently I was wandering through our National Zoo in Washington DC, admiring the many exhibits that allow people of all ages to learn about the creatures that share the earth with us. As I was passing through the seal exhibit ...
General Info for STAMPEDGREEN.COM from Doug the Green Blogger from Virginia
... there was kiosk that described the harm to seals caused by the common
plastic grocery bag because so many of them end up in our oceans. So
what about plastic jugs, or glass bottles, old shoes or tin cans? You
may be surprised to learn of the longevity of some of these items as
they are discarded as mere trash. I used to not consider my waste, my
trash…things I simply throw away but now I carefully consider before I
toss and here is why:
-
Cigarette butts last about 5 years
- Candy wrapper paper lasts about 5 years
- Plastic bags can last up to 20 years
- Nylon material can last 40 years
- Leather can last 50 years
- Aluminum and tin can last 80 to 100 years
- Glass bottles about 1,000,000 years
- Plastic bottles
- and Styrofoam may last forever!
So whats the point you ask? Well from where I sit I see only one place
called earth. We all share it so if I take an extra minute or two to
recycle one of the above mentioned items, I do my own little part in
preserving the space we enjoy…the green space. I encourage all of you
to do the same. If you already recycle, GREAT! Get stamped green now !
If not give it a try, and just think about the positive impact you can
have for over 100 years by simply recycling that soft drink can.
See you next time for my Did you know…column!
